Fungal Nail Treatment Q & A

What is fungal laser treatment?

Fungal laser treatment is an outpatient procedure that uses targeted light energy (lasers) to heat up and destroy toenail fungus. Destroying the fungus prevents infection from spreading and reduces the risk of other complications like toenail loss.

At Valley Stream Foot Doctor, Dr. Schumann provides treatment with the PinPointe FootLaser for fungal nails. This treatment is FDA-cleared and has a proven track record. It targets foot fungus quickly and effectively without damaging your toenails or the surrounding skin.

Am I a candidate for fungal laser treatment?

Consider fungal laser treatment at Valley Stream Foot Doctor if your toenails are:

  • Yellow, brown, or otherwise discolored
  • Thick and brittle
  • Separating from the nail bed
  • Crumbling or smelly

Toenail fungus often worsens over time. Prompt treatment can stop the infection from spreading and keep your toenails healthy.

What does fungal laser treatment involve?

At Valley Stream Foot Doctor, fungal nail laser treatment is an outpatient procedure that takes 30-60 minutes on average.

Before recommending laser treatment, Dr. Schumann reviews your medical records, asks about your symptoms, and examines your toenails. A visual exam is usually enough to diagnose toenail fungus, but Dr. Schumann might also clip a nail sample and look at it under a microscope to determine the severity of the infection.

If Dr. Schumann determines you can benefit from fungal laser treatment, he has you sit or lie on an exam table. Then, he uses a handheld laser to target the fungal spores inside your toenails. The laser penetrates your nails, heating the fungus and causing it to die.

After treatment, the infected nail grows out and is replaced with healthy, non-infected nail tissue. Dr. Schumann monitors your symptoms at routine checkups and provides touch-up treatments to prevent the infection from recurring.

Will I need more than one fungal nails treatment?

Fungal laser treatment typically destroys toenail fungus in a single session, but depending on the infection’s severity, multiple treatments could be needed. Follow Dr. Schumann’s recovery instructions and attend each follow-up appointment.

Is toenail fungus preventable?

There’s no way to prevent toenail fungus entirely, but you can reduce your risk. Dr. Schumann recommends keeping your toenails clean and dry, trimming your nails regularly, and always wearing shoes in public places. Likewise, if you have diabetes or poor circulation, inspect your feet and toenails daily.
